Kodak has brought out a sensor for the camera phones. This 1.4 micron, five megapixel sensor is known by the code KAC-05020 and can increase the quality of the images while cutting down on the noise and tackles light sensitivity. The latest colour filter pattern with super clear pixels and thanks to the truesense CMOS pixel design which reverses traditional sensor polarity.
When compared to digital cameras, the camera phones are way below the standard and this is attributed to the difference in the sensor and pixel size. Thus, poor performance in low light is common because each sensor pixel (about 1.75 microns in camera phones) measure only two or three times the wavelength of visible light. In short, this means that the difference between sensors and pixel size leads to poor output in low light and decrease in the quality of the images. Moreover, many digicams also dont show really great results with low light conditions which drive many enthusiastic shutterbugs to digital SLRs.
The all new KAC-5020 from Kodak guarantees better performance than other camera phone sensors, even with pixel size as small as 1.4 micron. This is possible only due to the merging of two technologies. Kodaks Truesense pixel design reverses normal sensor polarity which means that the absence of electrons (signals usually are measured by detecting electrons present when the light hits the sensor surface) is measured.
The Truesense technology minimizes the cross connection between adjacent pixels by as low as 300 to 400 percent. This means that the awfully disturbing (sometimes embarrassing) click noise while capturing pictures is reduced radically.
The other technology which boosts up performance is the new colour filter pattern. The addition of the panchromatic pixels to red, blue and green pixels which are already present increases image clarity. The pixels usually are sensitive to all wavelengths of visible light where they can be detected by the sensor. This increases the light sensitivity by a whopping 200 to 400%.
At five megapixels, the KAC-5020 is the highest resolution which has ever been obtained in a sensor which is in the ¼ inch optical format. Moreover, it can also click up to 30 frames per second of HD video at 720p. In combination with TI OMAP and OMAP DM solutions, the KAC-5020 can produce amazing features such as digital image stabilization, rapid aqua focus, red eyed recognition and facial recognition. With all these and more, Kodaks KAC-5020 sensor was showcased at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
