Remotes usually work based on IR - infra red. The small led styled bulb in the front of the remote may not glow but send out IR signals which are invisible to human eyes. Fortunately, cameras can pick them up. So if you quickly want to check your remote, just beam it in front of a video camera and you can see the bulb glow in white! You don't even need to search for a camera, almost every cell phone has one.
