Just like the slim version of PS3 boosted sales of the bigger and bulkier PS3, same thing happens with the portables too.
Sony when they first announced their plans on a Slimmer version of PS3 which was initially critized for being very bulky, they were struck with an increased sales of their regular PS3 console also helped by some price reductions.
Now the portable version PSP gets a second generation version called PSP Go and this announcement has again increased the sales of older PSP gaming devices.
