Codec stands for Compression and Decompression. All video and audio files such as the avi, mp3, mp4 are all compressed with their respective codes or technology, hence when the file is played in any media player, it has to be decompressed based on the code it was compressed. And this code is what provided by the codecs. By default or out f the box, Windows Media Player and many other common players may not have codecs for all formats installed. Microsoft and other manufacturers could have made them available but for unknown reasons or for licensing issues, they never distribute them bundled. Fortunately, you dont need to install each of the codec separately. K-Lite Codec pack is an awesome and free codec pack which includes codecs almost every popular video and audio format out there, on a single installation. Only registered users can write comments!
